MOROCCO

Morocco is a country of a unique beauty. The landscape is very diverse. It’s composed of the green hills to the north, the lowland in the central of Morocco. In the middle we see also the mountain ranges and the High Atlas, at the Mediterranean and the Atlantic the sandy beaches and in the south the desert and the anti-atlas.The combination and easy living of the Arabs and the Berbers makes the culture very rich.Southern Morocco offers the visitor a simply wonderful landscape and a very interesting culture. There are the mountain ranges of the High Atlas with 3000 to 4000 meter high peaks, which are covered in snow during the winter. The villages and fields of the Berber are located on terraces. The Berbers are considered the original habitants of North Africa. Culture and language is very different from the Arabs. Many of the villages in the High Atlas are located far away from civilization. Daily life consists of no electricity and telephones. Here one finds real craftsmanship, where most of the entire village has specialized in a certain profession. There is a blacksmith village, a pottery village, an olive-press village, etc.After passing over the High Atlas, one arrives in “Valley du Dadés”, the valley that separates the High Atlas from the Anti-Atlas. Here the landscape changes abruptly: palm trees and oasis let you know that the Sahara is no longer far away. The snow-covered mountains of the High Atlas build a fascinating background. Here you find the “street of the Kasbahs”, which got its name from the numerous fortresses and castles – the so-called “Kasbahs”- obtained by the Berber. One believes that they are in the middle of a fairyland of 1001 nights. The mountains of the Anti-Atlas are around 2000 meters high. Two Berber families, the Aït Atta and the Saharaouien colonized this region. The Aït Atta are related to the Berbers from the rest of the Atlas mountain range. The Saharaouien originated from the Sahara, where they lived all along as Nomads. Still today, the dark skinned and always-blue clothed Saharouien is continuously en route, with camel and tent, for water and grass. When one continues further south, the mountain ranges slowly disappear, the landscape becomes desolate, the horizon endless, the Sahara begins. On an old signpost reads “52 days to Timbuktu”. A reminder of the caravan times. Deserts and sand dunes surround lovely oases with many palm trees.
